If you’re looking for that perfect blend of small-town charm, community spirit, and family-friendly amenities — Fergus checks all the boxes.

Nestled along the Grand River in the heart of Centre Wellington, Fergus is more than just scenic streets and historic stone buildings (though we’ve got plenty of those too). It’s a place where neighbours know each other, kids still play outside until the streetlights come on, and local events bring the whole town together.

Here’s why families love calling Fergus home:

Fergus has that “everyone knows your name” vibe. It’s a town where parents feel good about their kids walking to school or riding their bikes to the park.

🎓 Great Schools & Youth Programs
From well-rated elementary schools to strong extracurriculars like sports leagues and arts programs, Fergus makes it easy for kids to thrive both in and out of the classroom.

🌳 Outdoor Fun Everywhere
Whether it’s tubing down the Grand River, exploring trails, or splashing at the Elora Quarry (just minutes away), there’s no shortage of fresh-air adventures.

🛍️ Small-Town Life With Big Perks
Downtown Fergus offers local shops, farmers’ markets, and cozy cafes, while still being close to Guelph and the 401 for commuters.

Fergus, Ontario is a beautiful town with a rich history and plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, including hiking, walking and biking. The town is home to a number of well-maintained trails that offer stunning views and a chance to explore the natural beauty of the area.

One of the most popular walking trails in Fergus is the Elora Cataract Trailway, a former railway line that has been converted into a multi-use recreational trail. This trail stretches for over 40 kilometers and offers a flat, easy walk or bike ride through beautiful countryside, small towns and leads right over the 73 foot Shands Dam at the picturesque Lake Belwood. The trail passes through Fergus, as well as the nearby towns of Elora and Salem, and offers plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery along the way.

One of my personal favourites is the Aboyne Trails, located on the border of Elora and Fergus. This trail loop spans approximately 2km and offers a moderate hike, with optional elevation changes for those seeking a challenge. By following the stairs, you'll reach the river beneath the bridge featured in the photo above, offering a beautiful and often times, private view. This riverside option below is particularly inviting, creating the perfect ambiance to relax and even enjoy a picnic. A different option is to stick to the high ground and the Trestle Bridge Loop, which is a relatively flat but longer 9km loop that offers views like the one depicted above.

In addition to these longer trails, Fergus also has a number of shorter, more urban walking trails that are perfect for a leisurely stroll. These trails include the Fergus Trail, which winds its way through the downtown area and offers a chance to explore the town's historic buildings, shops,  and beautiful gardens, including the Templin Gardens.

Overall, Fergus is a great destination or place to live for those who love to walk, hike, bike and be in touch with nature, with a wide variety of trails to suit all levels of ability and fitness. So grab your walking shoes or your bike and head to Fergus to explore the town's beautiful trails and natural beauty.
